Overview

The Automation Design Engineer is responsible for the research, development, and design of automated and custom equipment at New Millennium. The ideal candidate must demostrate the ability to integrate innovative ideas and new technologies into practical solutions that will improve the fabrication process. The ability to work independently and in a team environment is essential.

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide design concepts and sketches that offer new, unique, and value-added ideas
  • Research and co-ordinate the introduction and implementation of new technologies
  • Prepare equipment specifications and requirements
  • Design new manufacturing systems and equipment of varying sizes and complexity
  • Redevelopment and engineering of legacy equipment and systems utilizing current technology and components
  • Liaise with integrators, vendors, and project team members to generate designs and ensure coherence
  • Perform computer simulations and experiments to virtually test and refine the designs
  • Support multiple projects and implementations
  • Ensure projects are planned and executed in a timely and efficient manner while routinely reporting progress
  • Creation of BOM’s that assist in controlling design and material costs on assigned projects
  • Establish and maintain design standards to reduce equipment, material, and labor costs
  • Provide technical guidance during build, testing, and commissioning of new or modified machines and systems
  • Investigate, test, and troubleshoot equipment design issues at NMBS sites, must be able to solve issues remotely
  • Prepare technical manuals, work instructions, training materials, and troubleshooting guides
  • Work with Plant Maintenance and Engineering to ensure equipment is properly installed, commissioned

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Design Engineer
  • BS in ME, Automation, or Related Field
  • Strong experience and knowledge of mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, machine controls, and electronics
  • Analytical with the ability to solve difficult problems by providing innovative concepts and effective solutions
  • Ability to create equipment designs and documentation in addition to maintaining systems developed by others
  • Ability to size mechanical systems that perform reliably meeting life cycle requirements
  • Have a clear understanding of RIA and safety requirements
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
  • Proficient in 3D CAD modelling (Solidworks), Word, and Excel
  • Excellent communication skills

Preferred:

  • Mechanically inclined, hands-on individual
  • Steel and fabrication industry experience that includes welding, forming, cutting, and rolling technologies
