Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) announced its entry into the flat rolled aluminum market with a revolutionary 650,000 tonne per year facility in the Starkville, West Point and Columbus Mississippi Golden Triangle area. Aluminum Dynamics LLC. is SDI’s first aluminum facility that is planned to start up in 2025. This project presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to be on the ground floor of this new business for SDI. Positions will start simultaneously with the start of construction of this state-of-the-art facility, providing the unique opportunity to help design and implement the systems and processes required by the mill. Aluminum Dynamics LLC., is seeking a Quality Control Manager who will initially lead quality and product technical activities to successfully commission new equipment, start-up, and achieve customer qualifications for automotive, can sheet and common alloy products. During construction and commissioning this role will work collaboratively with departmental operational readiness teams to approve product performance and validation criteria for equipment vendors. Create commissioning and qualification schedules to meet customer requirements. During the start-up and product qualification phase, drive qualification milestones to support critical customer programs and platform schedules. Ensure qualification inventory is adequate. Design physical testing laboratories, specify testing equipment and secure required lab industry testing certifications. Determine the best course of action for start-up and commissioning while proactively identifying project risks and countermeasures. Once steady state manufacturing is achieved, build metallurgical, technical product, laboratory, quality assurance, field service teams. Provide ongoing leadership for culture development, coaching and mentoring the metallurgical team across all operating departments. Provide oversight of the execution of the quality management systems. This role works closely with the Automotive, Can Stock and Industrial Product Sales team to influence and support the execution of the product development strategy. Additionally, this position is customer facing and has responsibility for developing strategic and annual business plans. Ensures action items are on time and on budget.

Responsibilities

  • Lead metallurgical, technical product, laboratory, quality assurance and field service teams through start-up, qualification, and ongoing steady state operations.
  • Establish product performance validation criteria for equipment.
  • Develop commissioning and qualification schedule to meet ramp-up requirements.
  • Determine workforce staffing, training, and developmental needs.
  • Champion environmental, health and safety systems and culture.
  • Foster a team of technically competent, positive and innovative individuals. Drive process optimization and learning culture.
  • Implement quality systems in support of internal and external customer requirements.
  • Manage spending budgets, product cost controls.
  • Engage with customers regarding technical product specifications, manufacturing capabilities and ongoing product performance.
  • Determine flow path process and product improvement actions.

Qualifications

  • Metallurgical or Material Science Bachelor's degree from a 4-Year accredited institution, or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of Aluminum (or similar) manufacturing experience.
  • Based on prior experience, must be able to demonstrate leadership and large team management competencies.
  • Be able to translate customer specifications to process performance standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of automotive, can stock and industrial product quality management systems.
  • Preferred advanced knowledge for aluminum automotive product can stock and industrial applications.
  • Preferred advanced understanding of aluminum casting, hot and cold rolling, annealing, heat treating and sheet finishing processes.
  • Preferred experience managing large-scale projects and/or programs and supervision experience leading and mentoring others.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills, and detail oriented.
  • Ability to create an environment of teamwork on a cross functional basis. Strong teaming, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
