NanoAL is seeking a highly motivated individual to be a full-time Project Engineer. The primary responsibility is the development and deployment of integrated mechanical systems and subsystems within NanoAL’s advanced material sorting technologies. The candidate will be a core member of the engineering team and will be responsible for planning and executing project tasks and working cross functionally within the team. The working location is in the greater Boston area (Billerica, MA). This is a 100% onsite position with up to 25% domestic travel.

Responsibilities

• Plan and execute project engineering activities, from ideation through deployment.
• Activities include brainstorming/conceptualization, prototyping, validation testing, scale-up, light production, and onsite installation and testing.
• Fully utilize available internal NanoAL capabilities for design, prototyping, and production including: Fusion 360, Inventor, 3D-printing, machining, and assembly.
• Utilize external resources to source materials, tooling, components, and subsystems as necessary.
• Develop close relationships with internal and external partners and coordinate with them in a timely manner through phone calls, emails, and visits to partner locations.
• Coordinate with employees in other divisions for supplementary details necessary to achieve project goals.
• Test integrated subsystems and systems and report results against the project goals.
• Travel to perform installation, setup, testing, diagnostic and retrofit procedures.
• Collaborate with NanoAL team members on all project activities.
• Write technical documents for the operation of integrated systems.
• Provide technical support for integrated systems.
• Other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

Qualifications

Required Minimum Position Qualifications: B.S./M.S. degree in an engineering field such as Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, ECSE, Robotics, Manufacturing, or similar and zero to five (0-5) years of work experience in an engineering role or similar related occupation.

Position also requires demonstrated experience in the following:

  • Experienced in the life cycle for integrated mechanical systems from conceptualization through to deployment and field support. Plus: Experience in prototyping and fabrication.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
  • Proficient in 3D modeling. Fusion 360 and/or Inventor preferred.
  • Able and willing to fly on passenger aircraft as needed for domestic business travel, up to 25% of the time.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills; ability to write structured reports and technical documents.
  • Excellent process, analytical, observational, and computer skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products required, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive.
  • Ability to work safely and maintain productivity in a fast-paced laboratory and industrial setting.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, manage multiple assignments, and meet deadlines.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to effectively operate and problem solve based on limited information/experience when necessary.
  • Observational, process, data analytical, computer, and technical writing skills necessary to perform the essential responsibilities of a Project Engineer.
  • Ability to lift and carry items that weigh up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to sit, stand, climb, crouch, bend, and twist as need to accomplish tasks normal to the position.
  • Capable of and willing to wear/utilize personal protective equipment as required by company policy. This may include, but is not limited to, safety glasses with side shields, face shield, gloves, safety footwear, respiratory protection, hearing protection, lab coat, and others.
  • Manual dexterity necessary to perform the essential responsibilities of a Project Engineer.
  • Optical acuity necessary to perform the essential responsibilities of a Project Engineer.
  • 100% onsite; must have the ability and means to travel to and from company premises Monday through Friday.
  • Ability and means to travel for company business in Massachusetts and other local areas.
  • Able to perform occasional extended business travel (up to five (5) days duration) as required.
  • Flexibility to adapt or change assignments based on internal dynamics and rapidly evolving project goals.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
