Overview

What Does Steel Dynamics Do?

Steel Dynamics is a leading industrial metals solutions company that produces lower-carbon, high-quality steel products primarily from recycled scrap. Operating through a circular manufacturing model, the company manufactures a wide range of steel products including flat roll, structural, and long products for industries such as construction, automotive, energy, and manufacturing. In addition to steel production, Steel Dynamics operates metals recycling facilities, steel fabrication plants, and aluminum production operations, serving customers across North America with a focus on innovation, efficiency, and sustainability.

What Makes This Internship Different?

This internship stands out from other quality internships because it provides students with hands-on exposure to the full spectrum of quality assurance within a major steel producer, rather than focusing on limited or repetitive tasks. Interns at Steel Dynamics are not only supporting established quality programs but also directly engaging in metallurgical testing, strip inspections, and root cause analysis that have a measurable impact on production efficiency and product reliability. Unlike many internships that restrict students to observation or data entry, this role involves active participation in customer and external audits, problem-solving alongside experienced engineers, and contributions to continuous improvement initiatives. The combination of technical lab work, exposure to vendor and agency interactions, and involvement in both short-term projects and long-term system improvements ensures that interns gain a comprehensive, industry-level experience that prepares them for future engineering and quality leadership roles.
