Overview

The program is designed to provide the basic skills and knowledge essential for maintenance employees. At the conclusion of the program, the employee will have completed the requirements for an Associate’s degree and demonstrated on-the-job training experience.

Responsibilities

Program Design

  • The apprenticeship program will combine on-the-job training and academic instruction.
  • Steel Dynamics has partnered with Virginia Western Community College (VWCC) to create a 2-year degree in mechatronics.      
  • The timeframe to complete the classroom portion of the training is two years. Work schedule will vary with class schedule and will consist of both classroom time and OJT days in the mill.
  • The apprentice will work alongside a designated “mentor” while in the mill on thier OJT days.
  • Graduates of the program will move into a maintenance role at the pay rate for a mill tech, ultimately filling a rotating shift position.

Qualifications

Program Requirements

  • Candidate must have demonstrated mechanical or electrical aptitude.
  • Be safety minded, possessing a strong work ethic, positive attitude, eagerness to learn, self-motivated, and hardworking.
  • Complete a battery of assessments, provide letters of recommendation from current Steel Dynamics' supervision and, if selected, participate in the interview process.
  • Ability to commute to both Steel Dynamics and VWCC.

Program Benefits

  • Tuition, books, and fees covered by Steel Dynamics (minimum GPA 3.0 required).
  • Hourly wages paid for both work and classroom hours.
