Overview

The Transportation Manager – GLD MI is responsible for overseeing transportation operations for the Great Lakes Division Michigan locations, including fleet utilization, driver and dispatch support, equipment maintenance, DOT compliance, safety, customer service, and coordination with internal teams to ensure efficient and reliable transportation service.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coach transportation team members, including drivers, payroll, dispatch, administrative, and maintenance staff, for the Great Lakes Division Michigan locations.
  • Responsible for the preventive maintenance and repair of all transportation equipment, ensuring that costs stay within budget limits.
  • Operate fleet in compliance with all federal and state DOT regulations as well as SDI/OmniSource safety rules and regulations.
  • Provide customer service and dispatch support to help ensure prompt service to customer locations and timely order fulfillment for end users.
  • Communicate effectively and foster a positive working relationship with other internal departments, including Marketing and Operations.
  • Negotiate third-party freight rates.
  • Manage fleet utilization by regularly reviewing rates, monitoring driver performance and efficiency, and identifying opportunities to improve transportation operations.
  • Verify payroll for accuracy.
  • Other projects as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Required

 

  • 2-5 years of experience operating a medium-sized fleet or common carrier fleet
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Strong working knowledge of federal and state DOT laws and regulations
  • Proven knowledge of transportation equipment operation and routing
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve issues in the safest and most effective manner
  • Intermediate-level experience with Microsoft Office products
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to stay organized and manage time effectively

Preferred

  • Previous experience with SAI/RIMAS, Carrierweb, and OTM software
  • Previous experience managing union employees and/or contract negotiations
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Mechanical background
